Centre Launches Program for Returnees from Conflict Zones, Enhances Moroccan Counter-Extremism Model

Centre Launches Program for Returnees from Conflict Zones, Enhances Moroccan Counter-Extremism Model
A A

On Wednesday, the “Reconciliation” center officially launched a new program aimed at reintegrating individuals returning from conflict zones. This initiative coincided with the closing ceremony of the twentieth session of the “Reconciliation” program, which also celebrated the tenth anniversary of this national effort designed to rehabilitate those convicted of terrorism and extremism.

A New Approach to Reintegration

The head of the “Reconciliation” center emphasized that this new initiative reflects a significant evolution in Morocco’s approach to preventing violent extremism and fostering reintegration. By providing spiritual, psychological, social, and legal support, the program aims to assist returnees while involving their families and former inmates in the process to enhance their chances of successful integration into society.

A Decade of Progress

Since its inception in 2017, the “Reconciliation” program has transformed into a national model over the past ten years. It uniquely balances national security concerns with the protection of human rights, promoting values of moderation, citizenship, and tolerance.

Strengthening Institutional Frameworks

The establishment of the “Reconciliation” center in 2023 marks another phase in this transformative journey. This new institution aims to institutionalize the program by improving coordination among various stakeholders, thus ensuring a comprehensive approach to diagnosis, rehabilitation, and support. This framework is designed to bolster reintegration efforts according to a cohesive national vision.

Strategic Objectives and Community Involvement

The center’s strategy encompasses five key areas, including countering extremism within prisons, post-release care for beneficiaries, community resilience initiatives, conducting scientific research, and organizing training sessions and conferences. These efforts are aimed at enhancing the effectiveness of preventive policies and facilitating the exchange of expertise nationally and internationally.

A review of a decade of the “Reconciliation” program highlights that reintegration is not merely a post-release phase but rather a comprehensive process that begins with initial assessment and rehabilitation within the prison system, continuing through aftercare to strengthen reintegration and mitigate the risk of recidivism.

In his address to the participants of the twentieth session, the head of the center urged them to continue their journey of intellectual reflection and reconcile with themselves and society. He reaffirmed that Morocco remains open to anyone demonstrating a genuine desire for reform and positive integration.

Concluding his remarks, he underscored that the launch of the new program for individuals returning from conflict zones represents a significant milestone in the evolution of the Moroccan experience, reiterating the commitment of the “Reconciliation” center to enhance prevention and reintegration mechanisms while promoting values of moderation to ensure societal security and stability.
