AI Unlocks the Past: Russian Tech Deciphers Arabic Manuscripts Rapidly

AI Unlocks the Past: Russian Tech Deciphers Arabic Manuscripts Rapidly
A A

Russian researchers have made significant strides in harnessing artificial intelligence to preserve human heritage, developing specialized software capable of reading Arabic and Buddhist manuscripts. This breakthrough promises to revolutionize the study of rare historical texts and expedite their analysis and translation.

Innovative AI Tools for Manuscript Preservation

A team from the Institute of Oriental Studies at the Russian Academy of Sciences has unveiled optical character recognition systems designed to minimize the time and effort required to deal with ancient manuscripts. This advancement allows scholars to concentrate on scientific aspects rather than performing routine technical tasks. The researchers emphasize that these ancient texts provide a rich record of history, religion, language, law, philosophy, and everyday life, yet decoding them remains a complex endeavor due to the degradation of many manuscripts and the intricate handwritten scripts requiring specialized expertise for interpretation.

Transforming Text Processing

According to the research team, the new software can reduce up to 90% of the technical work involved in manuscript processing. This efficiency accelerates proofreading, translation, and historical analysis, opening new horizons for researchers and historians. The process begins with scanning the manuscript, followed by artificial intelligence algorithms enhancing the image quality and rectifying visual defects accumulated over time while preserving the original writing details. This is particularly significant for Arabic manuscripts, where a single point or diacritical mark can alter the entire meaning of a word.

The program not only identifies letters and words but also analyzes linguistic context and general meaning, thereby improving reading accuracy. Once the manuscript is converted into digital text, researchers review the results and compare them with the original to correct any errors before conducting translations or scientific studies.

A Complementary Role for Researchers

Alekber Alekberov, the acting director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, has emphasized that these technologies are not intended to replace researchers or translators. Instead, they aim to equip them with modern tools that enhance research efficiency and reduce time and effort. Alekberov anticipates that artificial intelligence will play an integral role in the future of research on heritage and manuscripts, reinforcing the notion that technology and human insight can work in tandem to elevate the study of history.
