Moroccan international Zakaria Wahdi has expressed unwavering commitment to representing Morocco, despite the option of playing for Belgium and receiving numerous calls from the Belgian Football Association. In a conversation with the Dutch-speaking “Het Laatste Nieuws,” the Racing Genk defender emphasized that his choice was clear from the outset.

The 24-year-old right-back stated, “I didn’t hesitate for a moment. Morocco was simply my priority.” This heartfelt decision stems from his long-standing connection with the Atlas Lions and his belief in the promising sports project that Morocco is developing.
Previous Experiences Shape Commitment
Wahdi reflected on his participation with Morocco in the Olympic Games in Paris and the African Cup of Nations for U-23 players, highlighting the exceptional atmosphere and infrastructure that conveyed a clear message: “Choose us.” He expressed his excitement upon being called up for the 2026 World Cup, viewing it as the culmination of a lifelong dream. “It’s a childhood dream coming true. I eagerly await the World Cup. The whole world is watching us, and experiencing something like this is incredible,” he shared.
A Role Model in Achraf Hakimi
During his time with the Atlas Lions, Wahdi looks up to his teammate Achraf Hakimi, whom he considers an inspiration on the pitch. “I observe him closely and aspire to reach his level,” he remarked. Impressively, Wahdi has scored 12 goals and provided 5 assists in his defensive role, setting him apart as a standout player this season. His contributions have also shone in the UEFA Europa League, where he netted 4 goals and recorded an assist.
