UNESCO Selects Morocco for Global Initiative on Heritage Protection and Tourism Development

UNESCO Selects Morocco for Global Initiative on Heritage Protection and Tourism Development
A A

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has designated Morocco as the launchpad for a new international initiative aimed at enhancing the protection of global heritage while fostering sustainable tourism. This initiative is being rolled out in collaboration with the TUI Care Foundation.

Context of the Initiative

This initiative reflects a vision to develop responsible tourism models within UNESCO World Heritage sites and their surroundings. It emphasizes the potential of tourism as a means to support local communities rather than exert pressure on cultural and natural resources.

Sustainable Tourism Development

In Morocco, the first practical activities will take place around the Ait Benhaddou area, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The focus will be on creating a more sustainable tourism experience that values cultural heritage and engages local populations in the economic benefits.

Training and Cultural Pathways

The initiative will also provide training programs for tour guides and artisans, alongside the establishment of new cultural routes and the development of modern tools to promote heritage sites. These efforts aim to enhance the appeal of these sites while preserving their historical uniqueness.

Employment Opportunities

The partnership seeks to bolster local job opportunities, particularly for youth and women, by promoting longer tourist stays and nurturing activities linked to traditional crafts and tourism services. This strategy not only promises economic growth but also aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that benefits the local community.
