Report: Substance Abuse and Self-Harm Threaten Migrant Minors in Ceuta

Report: Substance Abuse and Self-Harm Threaten Migrant Minors in Ceuta
A A

A recent report from the NGO No Name Kitchen sheds light on the troubling conditions faced by unaccompanied foreign minors in Ceuta, where drug use and self-harm have escalated alarmingly. The findings underscore a pressing humanitarian crisis, as these vulnerable youths grapple with instability and neglect.

Pressing Issues Among Minors

The report, titled “Surviving the Waiting Game,” reveals that during the period from June to August 2025, approximately 32.12% of the unaccompanied minors monitored exhibited signs of substance abuse, including cannabis, sedatives, and stimulants. This figure is more than triple the average rate recorded among adolescents in Spain, illustrating the severe challenges these youths face while awaiting legal resolution of their status.

Causes of Deteriorating Mental Health

The organization attributes these alarming trends to prolonged waiting periods for legal clarity, compounded by social vulnerabilities and inadequate psychological support services within overcrowded reception centers. Currently, these centers are accommodating 196 minors, despite having a maximum capacity of just 27 beds. Such overcrowding not only strains resources but also exacerbates the mental health crises among these young people.

Evidence of Distress and Abuse

Documented evidence indicates rising instances of self-harm, with reports of intentional injuries, burns, and bite marks. These behaviors reflect the immense psychological pressures stemming from isolation, anxiety, and instability. Additionally, testimonials and internal documents have uncovered various discrepancies within reception facilities, including mistreatment and insufficient staffing.

Calls for Urgent Intervention

No Name Kitchen urges Spanish authorities and relevant stakeholders to enhance psychological and social care. They advocate for the launch of prevention programs addressing addiction and self-harm, as well as the creation of safe spaces and educational and sports activities for minors. The organization warns that without immediate and effective interventions, conditions are likely to deteriorate further, placing these already vulnerable youths at greater risk.

The findings in this report highlight not only the individual struggles of these minors but also the urgent need for a comprehensive approach to their welfare, ensuring their basic rights and dignity are respected in the face of overwhelming adversity.
