Lead
Morocco is intensifying its efforts to uplift the rights of people with disabilities, as highlighted by Secretary of State Abd el-Jabbar Al-Rashidi during a recent parliamentary session. Driven by royal directives, the government is committed to integrating this vulnerable group into the broader socio-economic fabric of the nation.
A Commitment to Inclusion
During a question-and-answer session with the House of Councillors, Al-Rashidi emphasized that the vision of a social state cannot materialize without the active inclusion of individuals with disabilities in public policies. The Moroccan government has launched its second national plan, spanning from 2025 to 2027, to promote and safeguard the rights of this community.
Social Support Expansion
The government is significantly broadening its support base, with over 419,000 individuals with disabilities benefiting from the Social Protection and Social Cohesion Fund. Furthermore, nearly 28,000 children have gained access to enhanced educational support programs, marking a substantial increase of 64.7% since 2020. This initiative has not only alleviated financial pressures on families but also empowered mothers to engage more actively in daily life.
Enhancements in Rehabilitation Services
According to Al-Rashidi, the number of beneficiaries receiving rehabilitation services has reached 188,000. The government has distributed almost 3,900 assistive devices and has introduced financial compensations amounting to 400 dirhams, which rises to 500 dirhams for children with disabilities and orphans from the paternal side. These measures are crucial for fostering independence among disabled individuals and improving their quality of life.
Economic Integration and Employment Opportunities
In the domain of economic integration, the government has enabled the employment of 996 individuals with disabilities in public service through a unified national competition. Additionally, more than 2,600 income-generating projects have received support, and 1,919 disabled persons have found jobs through the National Agency for the Promotion of Employment and Skills. Notably, 1,318 individuals have benefited from the “Works” program, which aims to facilitate job access.
Political Representation that Matters
Al-Rashidi also shed light on political inclusion, pointing out that recent amendments to the Organic Law on Political Parties introduce significant incentives aimed at bolstering the representation of individuals with disabilities. The funding allocated to parliamentary seats won by candidates from this group has been multiplied sixfold, compared to its ordinary counterparts. This strategic move underscores Morocco’s commitment to creating a more inclusive political landscape.
Morocco’s initiatives underscore an essential shift towards recognizing and amplifying the voices of individuals with disabilities, reaffirming their rightful place in society.
