Progress on Bouleouane Dam Surpasses 78% to Boost Water Security in Marrakech-Safi

Progress on Bouleouane Dam Surpasses 78% to Boost Water Security in Marrakech-Safi
A A

The construction of the Boulaouane Dam in the Sidi Ghanem region of the Chichaoua province is progressing rapidly, with completion now over 78%. This ambitious project is part of Morocco’s broader national efforts to enhance water infrastructure and ensure sustainable water resources in the Marrakech-Safi region.

A Landmark Water Management Initiative

Situated on the Skssawa River, near the town of Imintanout, the dam will have a storage capacity of 66 million cubic meters and a height of 87.5 meters, positioning it as one of the region’s major dams. Modern construction techniques are being employed, including a core of compacted fill and a concrete facade for the main barrier, ensuring both durability and operational efficiency.

Improving Water Supply and Agricultural Growth

The Boulaouane Dam aims to significantly improve the potable water supply for Imintanout and surrounding areas, enhancing living conditions for local residents while ensuring a reliable supply of this vital resource, particularly in regions facing water scarcity.

Furthermore, the initiative will bolster the agricultural sector by providing water for small and medium-scale irrigation, potentially leading to increased agricultural outputs and improved incomes for farmers in an area where the economy is heavily reliant on farming activities.

Flood Prevention and Environmental Security

In addition to its primary functions, the dam will play a critical role in flood protection, safeguarding local communities and infrastructure from potential flooding in the Skssawa River basin. This contributes to greater environmental security in the region.

A Step Toward Enhanced Water Security

This project reflects Morocco’s commitment to bolstering water security and expanding its network of dams. It aims for a balanced distribution of water infrastructure to meet the diverse needs of various regions and maintain equilibrium between water supply and demand.
