Niger Unveils Over 30 Oil Blocks to Boost Exploration and Production

Niger Unveils Over 30 Oil Blocks to Boost Exploration and Production
A A

The Nigerien government is taking significant steps to enhance its oil sector, announcing the availability of 44 oil blocks for investment, with 35 now open to companies. This initiative aims to attract foreign investment and strengthen national energy capabilities amid efforts to reform the industry.

Reconfiguring the Oil Landscape

According to Niger’s Minister of Oil, Hamadou Tini, the government is also working to return four oil blocks to public ownership as part of a broader plan to reorganize the oil sector and improve management of its strategic resources. This move reflects a commitment to revamping an industry pivotal to Niger’s economic future.

Robust Infrastructure and Production Goals

Current estimates indicate that Niger has over 430 oil wells and a substantial geophysical database to support exploration in various basins. The Minister confirmed that the country aims to maintain a stable production level of approximately 110,000 barrels per day, which is essential for meeting local market needs while bolstering export capabilities.

Significant Resource Potential

Confirmed oil reserves currently stand at about 853 million barrels, with potential resources estimated at 2.7 billion barrels in the “Kafra” basin and between 6.8 to 6.9 billion barrels in the western basin. Tini emphasized that investing in human capital is crucial to ensure optimal utilization of natural resources and achieve sustainable development within the oil industry.

Economic Impact

The oil sector plays a vital role in Niger’s economy, contributing approximately 1,592 billion CFA francs (about €2.42 billion) to exports in 2025. Crude oil accounted for the largest share, valued at around 1,144 billion CFA francs, underscoring the importance of this industry for the nation’s financial health and development.

As Niger embarks on these ambitious reforms, it is clear that the strategic importance of the oil sector will continue to shape the country’s economic landscape in the coming years.
