National Campaign Promotes Children’s Rights and Opposes Child Labor

National Campaign Promotes Children’s Rights and Opposes Child Labor
A A

The National Observatory for Children’s Rights, under the directive of Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Meryem, has launched a national campaign to raise awareness on World Day Against Child Labor. This initiative aims to enhance collective consciousness regarding the protection of children’s rights, underscoring the critical need to address this ongoing issue.

Context of the Campaign

This campaign forms part of Morocco’s ongoing efforts to safeguard childhood and combat child labor. Official data reveals that child labor constitutes a severe violation of fundamental rights, particularly the rights to education, protection, and healthy development. Despite notable progress, the prevalence of child labor remains a pressing concern.

Current Statistics

According to recent statistics, approximately 101,000 children aged 7 to 17 are currently engaged in economic activities, representing about 1.3% of this age group. Alarmingly, 62,000 of these children are involved in hazardous work, and nearly 87.7% have dropped out of school. While there has been an 8.2% decline in child labor compared to last year and a 59.1% decrease since 2017, the situation remains critical.

Campaign Initiatives

The awareness campaign will feature the production of audiovisual messages that will be broadcast on national channels and digital platforms. Additionally, training sessions will be organized for local stakeholders in collaboration with the National Initiative for Human Development. These efforts aim to establish a more robust support system for children.

Ongoing Support Mechanisms

The National Observatory for Children’s Rights continues its work in protecting and monitoring child rights through several mechanisms, including the Listening Center (2511), a dedicated children’s parliament, and support systems for addressing psychological trauma among children. These initiatives emphasize a comprehensive approach to safeguarding the rights and well-being of Morocco’s youth.

In mobilizing society to confront these challenges, the campaign not only seeks to disseminate information but also aims to inspire action toward safeguarding children’s futures.
