Morocco’s Minister of Endowments and Islamic Affairs, Ahmed Toufiq, reaffirmed the country’s commitment to a religious foundation rooted in Ash’arite doctrine, Maliki jurisprudence, and Sunni Sufism during a recent parliamentary session. He emphasized the importance of these principles in fostering ethical values and rejecting extremism, while highlighting the government’s dedication to engaging Moroccan citizens abroad.

A Foundation of Moderation
In an age where religious interpretations often diverge, the Moroccan government underscores a cohesive religious identity. Minister Toufiq articulated that Ash’arite belief emphasizes inclusivity, specifically the non-condemnation of differing views. Meanwhile, the Maliki school of thought promotes a unified legal framework aimed at reducing sectarian disputes, all under the guiding principles of Sunni Sufism, which instills moral and behavioral virtues.

This doctrinal stance is not merely theoretical; it has vital implications for social cohesion in Morocco, a nation that prides itself on its historical tolerance and pluralism.

Embedding Morality in Religious Practice
To ensure that these principles resonate with Moroccans living abroad, the Ministry has prioritized religious guidance and community engagement within the diaspora. Collaborative efforts with Moroccan embassies and consulates aim to maintain connectivity with citizens, reinforcing their ties to religious and national values. This outreach is considered a cornerstone of the country’s religious policy.

As part of this initiative, the Ministry dispatches teams of readers and preachers to various host countries, despite facing operational challenges. This commitment not only extends Moroccan cultural influence but also strengthens community ties among expatriates.

Digital Transformation in Religious Outreach
Recognizing the importance of modern communication, the Moroccan Ministry has introduced advanced digital tools. Programs designed for the Moroccan community abroad are now offered in multiple languages—Arabic, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and English—via the Mohammed VI Channel for Quranic Broadcasting. The introduction of the “Mohammedan Quran” app, along with other digital initiatives utilizing QR codes, aims to enhance access to religious content.

These digital advancements are aligned with a comprehensive vision to reinforce Moroccan religious identity among the diaspora, adapting to the swiftly changing digital and cultural landscapes while further connecting citizens to their homeland.

Through these concerted efforts, Morocco seeks to uphold its religious legacy, encouraging a balanced approach that preserves its ethical, cultural, and spiritual values across borders.
