Morocco is accelerating its energy transition, aiming for energy sovereignty and a sustainable development model that can withstand global changes. This commitment was highlighted by Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Minister Leila Benali during a recent seminar in Lausanne, Switzerland.
A Technological and Social Shift
Speaking at the event titled “Energy and Climate Challenges,” Benali emphasized that energy transition transcends mere technological or economic change; it fundamentally reshapes social and political dynamics. This transformation involves redefining value chains, geopolitical balances, and the relationship between the state and its citizens.
She presented various international case studies, including large hydropower projects in Western China, stressing that energy choices inherently carry political and strategic dimensions that go beyond technical considerations.
Synergy Between Energy Transition and Artificial Intelligence
Benali also pointed to the increasing intersection of energy transition and artificial intelligence, indicating that these dual transformations require new considerations for infrastructure, demand for critical minerals, and globally adopted industrial models.
Morocco’s Ambitious Goals
Highlighting Morocco’s progress, Benali noted that the pace of reforms has intensified since 2021, driven by a notable surge in investment. In the first quarter of this year alone, the authorities licensed renewable energy projects with an installed capacity nearing three gigawatts. Investments in the sector have tripled, while funding for electricity networks, previously constrained for years, has seen a fivefold increase.
Morocco aims to achieve 50% of its electricity capacity from renewable sources by 2030, a goal that hinges on the continuation of reforms and sustainable governance in the sector.
The Call for Energy Democracy
The minister underscored the importance of energy efficiency and self-generated electricity, describing them as pathways to “energy democracy,” where citizens can produce part of their energy needs while better managing costs. Legislative reforms following the energy crisis of 2023 have introduced new incentives to support this movement.
Despite the promising indicators, Benali warned that the greatest challenge lies in ensuring the long-term sustainability of these transformations. She urged students to engage in what she termed a “human adventure” to confront a world increasingly affected by geopolitical crises and rapid technological advancements.
Moreover, she encouraged young people to uphold scientific rigor, develop critical thinking skills, and remain open to diverse global experiences to address contemporary challenges, particularly climate change, biodiversity loss, and emerging conflict patterns.
This seminar, organized by the Moroccan Alumni Association of the École Polytechnique in Lausanne and the Model United Nations affiliated with the institution, provided a platform for exchanging views on global energy and climate issues. It concluded with an open discussion on current international developments, including the implications of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and energy security challenges.
