Mohamed Ghiyate Calls for Strengthening Family Role in African Policies

Mohamed Ghiyate Calls for Strengthening Family Role in African Policies
A A

Mohamed Ghiyate, the Vice President of the House of Representatives, participated in the fourth African Parliamentary Conference on Family Values and Sovereignty, held in Accra, Ghana from June 3 to 6. The event gathered legislators and representatives from various institutions across the continent, reflecting a collective commitment to address crucial social issues.

The Role of Family in African Stability

During the conference’s opening session, Ghiyate emphasized that the family serves as a fundamental pillar for the stability of African societies and the preservation of their cultural and social identity. He argued that strengthening family structures is not opposed to modernization but is, in fact, a strategic imperative for long-term development and stability.

Morocco’s Progressive Reforms

The Moroccan lawmaker highlighted several social and familial reforms initiated under the leadership of King Mohammed VI. He pointed out efforts to enhance social protection and ensure equality of opportunity, along with reviewing the Family Code as a model for balancing developmental requirements with societal values. Such initiatives demonstrate Morocco’s commitment to promoting a harmonious blend of tradition and progress.

A Continental Vision for Sovereignty

Ghiyate underscored that the African Charter on Family Values and Sovereignty encapsulates a continental approach aimed at establishing a vision rooted in African realities. He called upon national parliaments to convert its principles into legislative initiatives and public policies capable of reinforcing community cohesion and safeguarding African state sovereignty.

Challenges and Opportunities Ahead

He further conveyed that the challenge facing the continent lies in leveraging its rich cultural heritage as a strength that aligns with global transformations. By doing so, Africa can assert itself in international discussions with a unified and independent voice. The conference is set to continue with discussions on the charter, exploring mechanisms for establishing a specialized African parliamentary network and electing its organizational structures, culminating in the adoption of the final statement.

This gathering reflects a significant moment for lawmakers who aim to shape a coherent African future, rooted in shared values while adapting to changing global dynamics.
