The city of Marrakech took a significant step towards revitalizing its urban landscape on June 25, 2026, with the inauguration of the “Akkadal Bahmad” park and the launch of the “Bab Agmat Heritage Appreciation Center.” These initiatives, led by Mayor Fatima Zahra Mansouri and attended by local officials and community leaders, aim to enhance green spaces and celebrate the city’s rich cultural history.
Enhancing Green Spaces
The opening of “Akkadal Bahmad” park aligns with a vision to expand green areas and restore historical and cultural heritage within Marrakech. Spanning nearly nine hectares, this project stands out as a key environmental and urban development initiative. It is designed to provide a natural oasis for both residents of the old neighborhoods and visitors to the city.
The park features modern amenities catering to various age groups, including three main entrances for easy access, a traditional water pool covering about 4,900 square meters, and a diverse vegetation cover comprising over 150 palm trees and more than 1,700 fruit and ornamental trees. In addition, well-maintained pathways, relaxation spaces, a children’s play area, and facilities for sports and fitness are included to enhance community engagement.
Commitment to Sustainability
In a bid to ensure the park’s sustainability, the municipality has implemented advanced irrigation techniques that blend traditional methods with drip and sprinkler systems. The inclusion of solar power and a sophisticated video surveillance and fire protection system further enhances safety for visitors and the preservation of facilities.
Celebrating Cultural Heritage
The Mayor also officially opened the “Bab Agmat Heritage Appreciation Center,” attended by the regional culture director and other key officials. This initiative aspires to spotlight the historical significance and cultural value of Marrakech under the theme “Marrakech, the Millennium City.” The center seeks to educate the public about Bab Agmat’s history and its pivotal role across different historical phases of the city.
Urban Upgrades and Infrastructure Development
The day wasn’t just about inaugurating new projects; it included a field tour to assess ongoing urban maintenance and enhancement works in the vicinity of Bab Agmat and surrounding neighborhoods. This includes upgrades to streets such as Moulay Ali, Bouskri, Bab Illan, as well as various areas within the old city.
Current projects focus on improving the rainwater drainage system, renewing road surfaces by removing old layers and laying down hot asphalt, and refurbishing sidewalks to meet architectural standards. Additionally, revitalizing historical pathways, enhancing road signage, and creating pedestrian walkways are planned, along with planting new green spaces to add aesthetic value to the area.
These endeavors are part of a comprehensive development strategy adopted by the Marrakech municipality, aimed at enhancing infrastructure while preserving historical sites. Such efforts not only promote road safety but also improve the quality of public spaces and bolster the cultural, economic, and tourism dynamics of the iconic city.
