Morocco is solidifying its presence in continental sports governance with the recent appointment of Abdelilah Wadhghiri as the head of the technical committee of the African Boxing Confederation. This development underscores the growing trust in Moroccan expertise within African and international sports bodies.

A Step Forward for Moroccan Sports Leadership

The Royal Moroccan Boxing Federation announced that Wadhghiri’s new role took effect in January 2026, reflecting the accumulation of expertise among Moroccan sports professionals in management and organizational frameworks. Wadhghiri’s mandate involves overseeing and coordinating various technical activities of the African Boxing Confederation, as well as monitoring both the technical and organizational aspects of continental competitions, notably the recently established African Boxing Cup. This initiative aligns with the technical standards set by the International Boxing Association (IBA), which oversees boxing events for the upcoming 2028 Olympic Games.

Experience That Speaks Volumes

Wadhghiri boasts an extensive background in the realm of sports governance, having previously served on the legal and regulatory committee of the IBA. In addition, he has held the position of International Technical Official (ITO) since 2012 and has been the reporter for the officials’ committee at the African Confederation, overseeing numerous high-profile African and international sporting events. His academic credentials are equally impressive, with a specialization in sports management, including a degree in Sports Technology and Management from the University of Lausanne in Switzerland and a Master’s degree in Sports Management and Economics from Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, which he completed in 2024.

Recognition of Moroccan Competence

This latest appointment is not just a personal achievement for Wadhghiri; it also signifies a wider acknowledgment of Moroccan competencies in the sporting arena. The Royal Moroccan Boxing Federation highlighted that this recognition enhances the visibility and influence of Moroccan sports figures in key decision-making roles across Africa. It reinforces a prevailing trend of increased Moroccan representation in sports leadership, reflecting a commitment to fostering local and continental talent in the dynamic world of sports.

As Morocco continues to assert its influence in sports governance, this appointment signals a pivotal moment for the nation’s contribution to the future of boxing in Africa, capitalizing on a legacy of expertise and management excellence.
