Geneva Meeting Outlines Path to Make Morocco an African Hub for Pharma and Healthcare

Geneva Meeting Outlines Path to Make Morocco an African Hub for Pharma and Healthcare
A A

Morocco is positioning itself as a regional hub for pharmaceutical manufacturing and healthcare logistics, a move underscored by recent discussions between Health Minister Ameen Al-Tahraoui and leaders from the World Bank and the Gates Foundation during a high-level meeting at the 79th World Health Assembly in Geneva.

A Strategic Dialogue Begins

This meeting marked the commencement of a consultative process aimed at developing a roadmap that outlines strategic priorities and action mechanisms. These initiatives are critical for Morocco’s ambition to evolve into a continental platform for drug production and distribution, aligning with the African initiative for access to medicines and medical manufacturing targeted for implementation by 2030, spearheaded by the World Bank.

National Manufacturing Development

Discussions focused on enhancing the national pharmaceutical manufacturing system and bolstering Morocco’s health product logistics and regional distribution capabilities. Key to these talks was the commitment to support medical supply chains for African nations, reflecting the goals contained within Morocco’s National Health Charter.

Morocco’s Potential in Healthcare

Participants emphasized that Morocco possesses the qualifications necessary for a pivotal role in regional health, citing the significant health sector reforms and improvements in industrial and logistical infrastructure. Their arguments were further bolstered by Morocco’s strategic geographic position and a continuously evolving regulatory framework in the pharmaceutical sector.

Looking Ahead

The parties agreed to continue technical and institutional consultations in the upcoming phase to delineate collaborative frameworks and partnerships that will actualize this vision into practical projects. This cooperative approach is intended to bolster health sovereignty and security while expanding access to medicines and health products across the African continent.

The 79th World Health Assembly, taking place from May 18 to 23, 2026, is set against a backdrop of increasing international discourse focused on strengthening health systems, ensuring the sustainability of medical supply chains, and enhancing access to treatments and health products.
