Nizar Baraka, the Secretary General of the Istiqlal Party, has placed significant blame on intermediaries within agricultural product distribution chains for the rising prices of essential goods and the declining purchasing power of Moroccans. He asserts that the multiplicity of middlemen exacerbates market imbalances and contributes to inflated costs for consumers.
Troubling Trends in Food Prices
During a recent gathering organized by the Association of Independent Economists in Casablanca, Baraka elaborated on his concerns, citing data from national institutions, including the Competition Council. Reports indicate a troubling lack of transparency between producers and consumers, attributed to the numerous intermediaries involved in agricultural marketing.
The Burden of Intermediation
Studies suggest that, on average, intermediaries account for approximately 34 percent of the final price of agricultural products. In some instances, this figure can soar to nearly half of what consumers ultimately pay. Baraka pointed out the paradox inherent in this structure: farmers struggle to receive fair compensation for their labor while consumers grapple with high prices, leading to mutual detriment and lost value throughout the distribution process.
Call for Food Sovereignty
Baraka emphasized the urgent need to bolster food sovereignty, particularly regarding essential commodities. He advocated for better water resource management and increased irrigation capacity, along with reserving a portion of domestic production to meet local market demands before exporting surplus goods. Strengthening production chains aimed at local consumption is essential to achieving this goal.
Economic Implications
The meeting witnessed the participation of various officials and economic stakeholders, including Ryad Mezzour and Abdellatif Maâzouz, who underscored the importance of implementing measures that protect citizens’ purchasing power while stabilizing markets. Maâzouz highlighted the continuous upward trajectory of consumer prices since 2021, negatively impacting household living standards and contributing to rising inflation, especially for widely consumed essentials.
The President of the Casablanca-Settat region further stressed the crucial role of the middle class in economic stability. Strengthening their purchasing power is vital for fostering domestic demand and supporting national production.
