A A

Audrey Azoulay, the former Director-General of UNESCO, was elected as a member of the French Academy of Fine Arts during a general session held on June 24, 2026. She fills the fourth seat in the category of free members, pending the approval of the French President, who serves as the academy’s official guardian, in accordance with the institution’s charter.

A Respected Cultural Figure

Born in 1972, Azoulay is an alumnus of Paris-Dauphine University, the Paris Institute of Political Studies, and the National School of Administration. She commenced her career in the French administration before joining the National Center for Cinema in 2006, where she was instrumental in developing legislative frameworks for cinema and adapting funding mechanisms for creativity in the digital era.

From 2014 to 2016, she served as a cultural advisor to the French President, significantly influencing the cultural policy by prioritizing the protection of cultural heritage in conflict-affected areas, a move that led to the establishment of the International Fund for the Protection of Heritage (ALIPH).

Ministerial Achievements

In February 2016, Azoulay was appointed Minister of Culture, where she oversaw the adoption of the Freedom of Creation, Architecture, and Heritage Law. This legislation reinforced heritage protection and established creative freedom as a fundamental right. Her tenure also saw significant reforms impacting live arts, ticketing transparency, and the cultural workforce.

Leadership at UNESCO

Elected as UNESCO’s Director-General in 2017 and re-elected for a second term, Azoulay held the position until 2025. Her tenure was marked by initiatives such as the “Reviving the Spirit of Mosul” campaign and the establishment of the first global ethical framework for artificial intelligence in 2021. She also bolstered heritage protection programs, particularly in Africa, underscoring her commitment to cultural preservation and innovation.

Her election to the French Academy of Fine Arts is a testament to her influential role in the cultural sphere, reflecting her dedication to promoting and protecting the arts and heritage. Azoulay continues to be a prominent voice in cultural discourse, shaping the future of arts and culture on both national and global stages.
