Revamping Morocco’s Tourism Sector: A Vision for Sustainable Growth

Morocco is poised to revolutionize its tourism landscape, with plans to introduce over 45,000 new beds between 2020 and 2025, according to Fatima Zahra Amour, the Minister of Tourism, Handicrafts, and Social and Solidarity Economy. This initiative comes amid rising seasonal demands, prompting reviews of pricing strategies to align with market dynamics.

Expanding Capacity Amid Rising Demand

In a recent session at the Council of Advisors, Minister Amour emphasized that Morocco’s budding tourism sector must adapt to the laws of supply and demand, especially during peak summer months. The tourism roadmap aims to spread visitor activity throughout the year, alleviating congestion at popular destinations. By diversifying attractions beyond hot spots, the government hopes to catalyze growth in less-visited regions.

Strengthening Domestic Tourism

Highlighting Morocco’s potential for internal tourism development, Amour noted that Moroccan tourists are the primary consumers, accounting for 28% of total overnight stays by 2025. With domestic tourism experiencing a 2% year-on-year increase, the minister expressed commitment to tailoring offerings that resonate with local tourists, ensuring that Moroccan experiences—ranging from natural landscapes to authentic cuisine—are prioritized.

Investment and Modernization Initiatives

The national accommodation capacity has surpassed 300,000 beds, achieving over 108% of its set target through the addition of new facilities. To sustain this momentum, the government has also launched the “Cap Hospitality” program aimed at modernizing classified accommodation units. Backed by state-subsidized loans, this initiative supports investments between 3 and 100 million dirhams, with repayment periods extending up to 12 years. So far, the initiative has approved projects from 91 hospitality entities.

Boosting Air Connectivity

As part of the broader strategy, the aviation sector is also set for expansion, with a 30% increase in capacity since 2019. Looking ahead, the introduction of 80 new air routes in 2025 will connect Morocco to key tourist markets and improve internal links between cities, further promoting accessibility.

Conclusion: A Visionary Approach to Tourism

Morocco’s ambitious plans reflect a deep understanding of the need for strategic diversification and sustainability in tourism. By focusing on holistic growth—encompassing investment, modernization, and air connectivity—the country aims to foster a robust tourism ecosystem that benefits both locals and visitors alike while securing its position as a leading destination in North Africa.
