The coastal city of Agadir is set to host the 17th edition of the International Documentary Film Festival, “Fidoudoc,” from June 19 to 24. This year, the festival will showcase 28 films from 16 countries, highlighting pressing contemporary issues.
Spotlight on Identity and Memory
Organized by the Association for Culture and Education through Audiovisual Media, Fidoudoc stands out as Morocco’s sole festival dedicated exclusively to creative documentary film. The current edition focuses on themes of identity, memory, and anti-colonial discourse. Among the 28 screenings, nine feature-length films will compete internationally for festival awards, judged by a specialized international jury.
A Memorable Opening
The festival will kick off with a special screening of “From Sun and Bullet,” directed by Jérôme Lemire and filmed in the Midelt region, marking its first presentation in Morocco. Notable attendees from the film are expected to engage with the audience.
In addition to the opening film, the programming includes works that tackle contemporary humanitarian issues. “Who Is Still Alive” by filmmaker Nicolas Vadimov presents testimonials from survivors of bombings in Gaza, while “Fatima… A Woman Named Rashid” by Hélène Harder will feature human rights activist Fatima Bouih.
Honoring a Cinematic Icon
This year’s festival pays homage to the late Egyptian director Youssef Chahine, coinciding with the centenary of his birth. Special screenings and artistic encounters will celebrate his legacy and influence on new generations of filmmakers in the Arab world.
Supporting Emerging Talent
Fidoudoc also aims to nurture the next wave of documentary filmmakers through a comprehensive professional and training program. This includes workshops, masterclasses, and networking opportunities for emerging talents, connecting them with international producers and distributors. Through these initiatives, the festival strives to bolster creativity within the documentary film landscape across Africa and the Mediterranean region.
