Statistics Reveal Saudi Arabia’s Rank Among Top Schengen Visa Applicants

Statistics Reveal Saudi Arabia’s Rank Among Top Schengen Visa Applicants
A A

Lead

In 2025, Morocco emerged as the fifth-largest source of Schengen visa applications globally, submitting a staggering 619,827 requests, according to recent data from the European Commission. This surge highlights not only the increasing mobility of Moroccans but also the growing demand for access to European opportunities amid rising rejection rates.

The Growing Demand for Schengen Visas

As Moroccans continue to seek avenues for travel, education, and employment opportunities in Europe, the statistics from 2025 reveal that European consulates in Morocco issued 480,354 visas, while rejecting 114,320 applications. This equates to a rejection rate of 19.2%, exceeding the global average of 14.8%. The high rejection rate raises concerns about the accessibility of European countries for Moroccan citizens.

Visa Trends and Implications

Notably, over half of the visas granted, specifically 265,244, were for multiple entries, indicating that a significant number of Moroccans rely on frequent travel to European nations. This trend reflects the interconnectedness of Morocco with Europe, driven by professional, academic, and family connections. As multiple-entry visas become increasingly common, it underscores the ongoing commitment of many Moroccans to engage with Europe on various fronts.

Global Context and European Trends

On a broader scale, the total number of Schengen visa applications reached 11.93 million in 2025, representing a 1.8% increase from the previous year. With over 10 million visas issued, the figures, while encouraging, remain below pre-pandemic levels. France continues to dominate as the most sought-after destination for Schengen visas, processing more than 3.1 million applications worldwide in 2025.

Assessing the Stakes

The rising number of applications and the significant rejection rates present a paradox for Morocco and Europe. While the desire for increased mobility is evident, the challenges faced in visa acquisition can hinder personal aspirations and professional opportunities. Addressing this issue could be crucial for fostering stronger ties between Morocco and European nations.
