The second edition of the “Sun Trip Morocco” race kicked off today in Laayoune, uniting participants from various countries on a remarkable 2,000-kilometer journey powered solely by solar energy. This initiative not only showcases sustainable mobility but also highlights the natural and economic potential of Morocco’s southern regions.
The Journey Begins
Participants from Morocco, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Australia embarked on an adventurous race through several cities, including Tarfaya, Tan-Tan, Tafraout, Zagora, and Meknes, before reaching the final destination in Rabat on May 20. Organized by the “Sun Trip” association and supported by the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region and the French Embassy in Morocco, the event is a celebration of Moroccan-French friendship and a commitment to renewable energy.
Riding on Innovation
According to Florian Bailey, the race’s founder, this year’s edition focuses on reducing carbon emissions. Participants rely on electric bicycles equipped with photovoltaic panels, enabling them to travel between 200 and 300 kilometers daily. With speeds reaching between 35 and 40 kilometers per hour, the event marries technological innovation with the spirit of adventure.
Showcasing Renewable Energy
French participant Frédéric Véron praised Morocco’s robust infrastructure and road quality, viewing the race as a valuable opportunity to demonstrate the potential of renewable energy in modern transportation. Yusuf El Haouas, a member of the “Sun Trip” association, emphasized that the event spotlights Morocco’s major energy projects, including the wind farm in Tarfaya, one of the largest of its kind on the African continent.
As the racers press on, their journey serves not only as a sporting event but also as a platform for environmental awareness and showcasing Morocco’s development potential.
