Lead
In a striking address during this year’s May Day celebrations, Morocco’s Minister of Economic Inclusion, Small Business, Employment, and Skills, Younes Skouri, unveiled what he termed an “unprecedented” government achievement in employment and wages. With a commitment to social equity, these developments underscore the government’s ongoing efforts to reshape Morocco’s socio-economic landscape.

A New Focus on Social Equity
Skouri emphasized that the government has placed social considerations at the forefront of its agenda, aligning with royal directives aimed at fostering social justice and improving citizens’ livelihoods. His remarks highlighted a transformative approach to economic policies designed to uplift vulnerable populations and enhance living standards across the nation.

Significant Financial Investments
The minister revealed that the cost of social dialogue has amounted to approximately 50 billion dirhams during the current legislative term, benefiting over 4.25 million workers. Direct wage increases and improved working conditions were among the key results of this investment, reflecting a proactive stance toward labor rights and economic growth.

Rising Wages and Job Creation
Skouri shared impressive statistics: the net average monthly salary has risen from 8,237 dirhams in 2021 to an anticipated 10,600 dirhams by 2026, marking a remarkable increase of around 28.7%. The minimum wage has also jumped significantly, from 3,258 dirhams to 4,500 dirhams. Furthermore, notable sector-specific wage hikes have been implemented in education, healthcare, and higher education, complemented by new social measures like paternity leave and enhanced family allowances.

Addressing Unemployment and Skills Development
The minister highlighted the creation of hundreds of thousands of jobs over recent years, alongside a relative decrease in unemployment rates. He noted an increase in workers registered with the National Social Security Fund, signaling improved job security. Moreover, new programs targeting young individuals without formal qualifications aim to connect skill development with market needs through vocational training and apprenticeships.

Towards a New Social Model
In conclusion, Skouri remarked that these reforms represent a shift toward a new social model prioritizing income enhancement, expanded social protection, and greater employment opportunities. He asserted that social dialogue would serve as a permanent tool for solution-building, rather than a temporary checkpoint in national discourse.
