Over Half of TB Cases in Morocco Are Extrapulmonary, Diagnosis Concerns Raised
A A

Lead
Morocco faces a troubling rise in tuberculosis (TB) infections, with extrapulmonary cases now accounting for 53% of new diagnoses. This trend poses substantial challenges for the country’s healthcare system, particularly in early detection and treatment management.

Rising Extrapulmonary Tuberculosis Cases
On the occasion of World Tuberculosis Day, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection revealed these alarming statistics, underscoring that extrapulmonary TB remains less recognized among the public, complicating early identification compared to pulmonary forms. This situation demands heightened vigilance from healthcare professionals and intensified awareness campaigns.

A recent awareness event held at the “Dar Al-Hadith Al-Hassania” in Rabat exemplified these efforts, organized by the Moroccan Coalition Against Tuberculosis and spearheaded by Dr. Jamal Bouzidi. Medical staff, civil society representatives, and academic figures gathered to address the pressing need for improved public health awareness and disease management strategies.

Understanding the Disease
Participants at the event emphasized the nature of TB and its transmission pathways, reiterating that, while TB remains a persistent health challenge, it is treatable with early diagnosis and a commitment to ongoing treatment. They highlighted key symptoms such as chronic cough, weight loss, and night sweats, which are essential for prompt identification.

Discourse at the meeting extended beyond medical concerns, shedding light on the social implications of TB. Attendees raised alarm over the stigma associated with the illness, which prompts some patients to conceal their condition, thus facilitating the disease’s spread and delaying essential treatment.

Calls for Coordinated Action
Advocates called for enhanced cooperation among various stakeholders, including healthcare institutions and civil organizations, emphasizing the need for integrated approaches to prevention, diagnosis, and care. Such strategies are crucial in curbing disease spread and improving control indicators.

This year’s World Tuberculosis Day theme, “TB Knows No Borders,” serves as a potent reminder to broaden awareness efforts to encompass all forms of the disease—particularly those that present subtle symptoms, complicating timely diagnosis.

Healthcare professionals believe that effectively combating TB in Morocco hinges on ramping up awareness campaigns, improving diagnostic access, and dismantling the social stigma surrounding the illness. These measures are vital for ensuring timely interventions and reducing transmission rates.
