Omar Al-Hayani Proposes Solutions for Livestock and Grain Markets

Omar Al-Hayani Proposes Solutions for Livestock and Grain Markets
A A

Omar El Hayani, a local council advisor in Rabat, has called for a robust intervention in the livestock and grain markets to address significant supply chain imbalances. His comments come on the heels of rising prices attributed to new market players, raising questions about the efficacy of current regulatory measures.

Context: The State of Markets in Morocco
As Morocco grapples with inflationary pressures, the livestock and grain sectors have emerged as critical areas of concern. The proliferation of “new speculators” in the market has led to escalating prices for both meat and grain products, leaving consumers facing a steep financial burden. The government had hoped that support measures and tariff exemptions for these sectors would stabilize prices, yet this has failed to materialize effectively, sparking debate over market management and regulatory oversight.

Rising Prices Amidst Market Turmoil
In a recent social media post, El Hayani expressed his concern regarding the investigative reports into these new market entrants. He highlighted how importers and livestock feed manufacturers have significantly contributed to rising costs despite substantial governmental support. This contradiction raises serious questions about the transparency and efficiency of import and distribution processes within these vital sectors.

A Call for Cooperative Regulation
El Hayani emphasized that merely sidelining the private sector or imposing strict price controls would be counterproductive, potentially leading to shortages and declining product quality. Instead, he advocates for strengthening public institutions, enabling them to compete with private entities through reasonable profit margins that ensure price stability and improved product quality.

Moreover, he proposed expanding the mandate of the National Professional Office for Cereals and Pulses to encompass the importation and marketing of livestock and grains. This broader scope could enhance the sector’s oversight and boost market equilibrium.

Learning from the Fuel Sector’s Missteps
In drawing comparisons, El Hayani referred to the fuel sector’s struggles over recent years, where a lack of strong public presence in refining and distribution has adversely affected market balances and pricing. His remarks underscore a critical juncture for Moroccan agricultural markets, where effective regulatory frameworks must be established to protect consumers and ensure fair competition.

Conclusion: A Balanced Approach to Market Regulation
El Hayani concludes by underscoring the necessity of reinforcing regulatory mechanisms for essential commodities. Strengthening these frameworks is vital to protect consumer purchasing power and combat practices that undermine fair competition and market equilibrium.
