New Details Emerge in Trial over Diego Maradona’s Death

New Details Emerge in Trial over Diego Maradona’s Death
A A

Lead
A close medical associate of Argentine football legend Diego Maradona has testified that a simple diuretic could have significantly improved the player’s health within 48 hours prior to his death. This revelation emerged during a court trial examining potential negligence by medical staff involved in Maradona’s care.

The Trial of Medical Negligence
In the ongoing trial in San Isidro, seven healthcare professionals are facing charges of possible negligence that could lead to sentences of up to 25 years in prison if convicted. Mario Chiter, an intensivist who treated Maradona in the early 2000s and was present during his autopsy in 2020, stated that a diuretic, commonly used to alleviate fluid retention, could have resulted in a notable recovery. Chiter remarked, “I see patients like him in intensive care daily; we give them diuretics to reduce fluid overload, and they return home within 12 hours.”

Health Complications Leading to Death
Experts have repeatedly indicated that Maradona suffered from significant fluid retention in various organs at the time of his death. Chiter’s testimony follows that of another physician involved in the autopsy, Carlos Casinelli, who emphasized that Maradona had “water everywhere.” Casinelli noted that such a high level of fluid accumulation could not have developed in less than a week to ten days, suggesting that the medical team should have recognized the swelling.

Decisions During Recovery
Chiter had previously advised against at-home recovery following Maradona’s surgery. However, the football icon opted for recuperation at a rented house north of Buenos Aires, where he ultimately succumbed to acute respiratory cardiac arrest accompanied by pulmonary edema—a condition marked by fluid buildup in the lungs. The implications of this ongoing trial not only delve into Maradona’s untimely death but also raise broader questions about the responsibility of medical professionals in critical care settings.

A Legacy of Controversy
As the trial is set to continue into July, Maradona’s legacy remains shrouded in controversy. His passing at just 60 years old has reignited debates about the standards of medical care provided to athletes, particularly in the face of severe health challenges. The outcomes of this trial could have lasting effects, impacting the future responsibility of medical practitioners in treating high-profile patients with complex health conditions.
