Lead
Morocco’s unemployment rate has risen to 10.8% in the first quarter of 2026, according to a report from the High Commission for Planning. The findings reveal stark disparities across urban and rural areas, as well as between genders, with youth disproportionately affected.

Disparities Across Regions
The latest employment survey indicates a notable divide in unemployment based on geographic and demographic factors. In urban areas, the unemployment rate stands at 13.5%, contrasted with just 6.1% in rural regions. Gender disparities are also pronounced, with women’s unemployment at 16.1%, compared to 9.4% for men. These figures underline significant social challenges embedded in Morocco’s job market.

Youth Unemployment Crisis
Perhaps the most alarming statistic is the youth unemployment rate, which has surged to 29.2% among those aged 15 to 24. For young adults between 25 and 34, the rate is also troubling at 16.1%. These figures portray an urgent need for effective policies aimed at integrating young Moroccans into the workforce, as they continue to face daunting barriers to employment.

Overall Employment Landscape
The High Commission for Planning reports that the total number of unemployed sits at approximately 1.25 million, with nearly 80% residing in urban areas. Women account for 31.3% of this total. Additionally, 671,000 individuals are categorized as underemployed, indicating insufficient working hours despite having jobs.

The potential workforce is estimated at 884,000, representing 5.5% of the inactive population, which has lifted the overall rate of underutilization (including unemployment and underemployment) to a staggering 16.6%. This figure rises to 18.3% in urban settings, revealing the persistent pressures facing the job market.

A New Era in Employment Measurement
The EMO 2026 survey marks a significant advancement in measuring labor market indicators in Morocco. By utilizing updated methodologies aligned with International Labour Organization standards, the new survey replaces the previous national employment research. This transition is vital for accurately interpreting employment trends and crafting responsive economic policies.
