The modern Jamarat facility in Mina stands as one of Saudi Arabia’s most significant advancements in crowd management at holy sites, designed to enhance safety and efficiency during the hajj pilgrimage. With the capacity to accommodate over 300,000 pilgrims per hour, it represents a transformative leap in how millions navigate this crucial ritual.

Revolutionizing Pilgrim Safety and Flow

Saudi Arabia’s Jamarat complex, a cornerstone project in the development of holy sites, sets a new standard for crowd control with world-class engineering and organizational strategies. This ambitious initiative ensures that the more than two million people participating in hajj can perform the stoning ritual safely and smoothly, particularly during the critical peak days known as the “Days of Tashreeq.”

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure

Spanning five stories and measuring 950 meters in length and 80 meters in width, the facility has evolved from its former basic stone structure into a sophisticated transit hub. The extensive upgrades include multiple access bridges, a network of entry and exit corridors, and an impressive array of over 386 escalators. Coupled with emergency exits and advanced cooling systems, this infrastructure is vital for managing the high volume of pilgrims.

In its commitment to operational excellence, the development firm “Kadanah” has implemented rigorous maintenance and enhancement programs, increasing the site’s operational capacity and safety features. The facility now includes over 340 escalators and 682 surveillance cameras, alongside 228 golf carts to assist in the transport of pilgrims and staff within the area.

Comprehensive Safety Measures

To further fortify safety, the facility is equipped with more than 295 fire hydrants, 1,078 fire extinguishers, and 3,350 automatic sprinkler systems, ensuring rapid response to emergencies. Additionally, the environment is tuned for safety and comfort, featuring 456 cooling units and over 74,000 lighting fixtures, creating an ambience conducive to the pilgrimage experience.

Enhanced Navigation and Crowd Management

The complex’s preparation also involved maintaining 1,216 directional signs and refurbishing hundreds of metal frameworks and shade structures. Key to crowd management, the site boasts more than 28,000 plastic barriers that direct pilgrim flow, ensuring an orderly and efficient atmosphere during peak times.

As ongoing improvements continue, the Jamarat facility redefines its role as a pivotal engineering project within the holy sites, exemplifying the Saudi government’s commitment to advancing the hajj experience. It reflects the tremendous effort invested in enhancing infrastructural support for the millions of faithful participants from around the globe.
