Essaouira Highlights the Role of Resilience in Climate Change and Sustainable Development

Essaouira Highlights the Role of Resilience in Climate Change and Sustainable Development

On Sunday, the coastal town of Essaouira celebrated International Argan Tree Day, highlighting the tree’s vital role in sustainable development and its function as a buffer against climate change and desertification. This event underscored Morocco’s commitment to preserving the argan ecosystem, recognized globally as a natural, cultural, and humanitarian treasure.

The Importance of the Argan Tree

The celebration took place at the headquarters of the Essaouira provincial council, presided over by Ahmed Bouaari, with notable attendees including the Governor of Marrakesh-Safi and various institutional and professional figures from the argan sector. This event coincided with the conclusion of the eighth International Argan Conference, reinforcing the strategic significance of the argan tree in enhancing resilience against water stress and climate fluctuations while promoting environmental, economic, and social balance in affected regions.

Global Recognition and Local Efforts

In his address, Bouaari emphasized that the argan tree serves as a cornerstone for environmental, economic, and social resilience. He reaffirmed Morocco’s commitment, guided by royal vision, to develop a comprehensive and sustainable value chain by expanding argan cultivation, improving forest areas, and enhancing local living conditions through scientific research. “One tree can foster a civilization and drive sustainable development,” he declared.

Omar Hilal, in a recorded message, highlighted Morocco’s shift from conservation to innovation, asserting that argan cultivation now acts as a lever for environmental, water, and economic sovereignty, embodying the country’s commitment to sustainable diplomacy and South-South cooperation.

Balancing Biodiversity and Local Development

During the event, Sharaf Hamid, the Regional Director of UNESCO for the Maghreb, described the argan tree as “a living memory, symbolizing resilience, knowledge, and the future.” He noted that the Arganeraie Biosphere Reserve, recognized since 1998 under the UNESCO “Man and Biosphere” program, exemplifies a model for balancing biodiversity conservation with local development.

Alexander Huynh, representing the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Morocco, advocated for an integrated approach linking water, agriculture, and environmental strategies, given the increasing impacts of drought and rising temperatures on the argan ecosystem. Meanwhile, Ilaria Carnevali, a representative from the United Nations Development Programme in Morocco, emphasized support for women’s cooperatives in the argan sector through digital marketing and access to new markets.

Collaborative Efforts for Sustainability

The General Director of the National Water and Forests Agency, Issam Ahbari, reiterated the collaborative efforts with national scientific research institutions, including the National Agricultural Research Institute, to protect and enhance the argan ecosystem against climate change and desertification.

The day’s events featured institutional presentations and the honoring of key stakeholders engaged in the conservation and development of the argan system, which now serves as a Moroccan model combining economic growth with the preservation of natural resources.
