Coal Prices Surge to Record Highs Ahead of Eid al-Adha

Coal Prices Surge to Record Highs Ahead of Eid al-Adha
A A

Lead
As the festival of Eid al-Adha approaches, Morocco’s charcoal market faces a pronounced imbalance between supply and demand, leading to price hikes of up to 25 dirhams per kilogram at the consumer level. Industry professionals attribute these increases to a significant drop in production, driven by recent heavy rainfall and humidity that have disrupted traditional manufacturing processes.

Disrupted Production Process
The production of charcoal in Morocco relies on traditional kilns constructed from soil, straw, and other insulating materials. However, difficult weather conditions have forced many of these units to remain inactive for extended periods, creating a notable scarcity during this critical time. The manufacturing technique involves the slow combustion of wood in sealed kilns, where oxygen levels are meticulously controlled; then, the kilns are covered with soil, leaves, and sand to manage the burn. This meticulous process can take several days to weeks.

Market Dynamics and Consumer Preferences
Currently, the most sought-after types of charcoal include “krouch” and lemon wood charcoal, which dominate the pre-Eid market. Krouch is favored for large barbecues due to its high heat output and long burn time, while lemon wood charcoal is preferred for preparing tagines and smaller home-cooked meals. At the wholesale level, prices hover around 15 dirhams per kilogram for lemon wood charcoal and approximately 12 dirhams for some varieties of krouch. However, these prices soar as they reach consumers, approaching 20 to 25 dirhams when transportation and profit margins are factored in.

Seasonal Pressures and Future Projections
The surge in prices is not solely attributable to the festive season; winter exerted considerable pressure on the market as demand for firewood soared for heating purposes, depleting stockpiles well before Eid. Additionally, some production slowdowns during Ramadan, when many workers in woodcutting and charcoal production operate at reduced capacity, have further intensified supply challenges.

Despite the current spike in prices, industry insiders anticipate that the situation will stabilize as the peak demand associated with Eid al-Adha subsides. However, some vendors have raised alarms about the proliferation of low-quality charcoal in certain neighborhoods. These inferior products not only fail to provide adequate heat but also ignite quickly, offering poor performance despite their relatively low prices.
