On Monday in Laayoune, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch presided over the inaugural board meeting of the regional health group for the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region, marking a significant step in the government’s ongoing healthcare reform initiative. This initiative aims to overhaul health service management and enhance accessibility in southern Morocco, reinforcing the government’s commitment to regional governance in healthcare.

A Step Towards Restructuring Health Services
The establishment of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra regional health group positions it as the fourth region in Morocco to implement this innovative healthcare model. This initiative aligns with royal directives aimed at establishing integrated regional governance for health services, essential for addressing the unique healthcare challenges faced in the southern provinces.

During the meeting, Akhannouch emphasized that this reform represents a fundamental shift in healthcare service management, promoting a regional organization to foster synergy among various health institutions. From primary healthcare centers to university hospitals, the aim is to ensure a more equitable distribution of services and improve patient care quality across the region.

Closer, More Effective Care for Southern Residents
The launch of the regional health group is expected to deliver a more accessible and effective healthcare offering to residents in the southern provinces. This initiative is part of broader infrastructure projects designed to revitalize health services in these areas.

Key components of the meeting included the presentation of the regional health group’s work program and budget for 2026, alongside the organizational structure and several resolutions approved by board members, as detailed by General Director Ibrahim Al-Ahmadi.

Strategic Importance of the Laayoune University Hospital
A focal point of the discussion was the strategic role of the Laayoune University Hospital, nearing completion with a capacity of 500 beds. Its opening is anticipated to significantly enhance healthcare delivery in the southern regions, reduce waiting times for patients, and support medical training for students at the local medical school.

Additionally, the meeting underscored the vital role of primary healthcare institutions, particularly the integration of family medicine as a starting point for treatment pathways. This approach aims to improve patient referral processes and alleviate pressure on hospitals.

Council members underscored that primary healthcare institutions will also serve an educational role for medical students and health professionals, thereby enhancing the quality of practical training and better aligning it with the actual needs of the regional health system.
