Lead

In a significant step towards overhauling Morocco’s healthcare system, Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch chaired the inaugural board meeting of the regional healthcare group in Laayoune on Monday. This initiative marks the fourth regional implementation of a healthcare reform drive aimed at enhancing health governance and accessibility across the nation, in line with the directives of King Mohammed VI.

The Push for Healthcare Reform

The establishment of the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra regional healthcare group underscores the Moroccan government’s commitment to improving healthcare in the southern provinces. This initiative aligns with King Mohammed VI’s vision of fostering regional development and addressing health equity across the country. By streamlining healthcare services, the project seeks to enhance the quality of medical care available to residents, thereby reducing disparities in access.

A Structural Shift in Healthcare Management

During the meeting, Akhannouch emphasized that the activation of regional healthcare groups represents a fundamental shift from a centralized model to a more integrated regional approach. This new framework facilitates coordination among various health institutions within the region, ranging from primary healthcare centers to university hospitals. The Prime Minister stressed that this would ensure equitable access to high-quality healthcare services, particularly for the Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra region.

Strategic Implications of a New University Hospital

The meeting also highlighted the strategic importance of the ongoing construction of a university hospital in Laayoune, which will feature 500 beds upon completion. This facility is expected to play a crucial role in elevating healthcare standards in the southern regions, minimizing patient waiting times, and strengthening the practical training for medical students from the local medical and pharmacy faculty.

Moreover, officials underscored the pivotal role of primary healthcare institutions in establishing family medicine as a cornerstone of patient treatment pathways. By improving patient referral processes, these institutions aim to alleviate the burden on hospitals and enhance overall healthcare delivery.

A Vision for Integrated Health Services

This reform initiative reflects the government’s commitment to establishing a new healthcare model that promotes integration and coordination across different treatment levels, while also addressing the specific needs of each region. Emphasis will be placed on hands-on training for healthcare professionals, aligning educational frameworks with the actual demands of the regional health system.
