Akhannouch in Nairobi: Morocco Champions Congo Basin as Africa’s Climate Stronghold

Lead
Moroccan Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch represented King Mohammed VI at the fourth summit of leaders from countries linked to the Congo Basin Climate Commission in Nairobi, addressing pressing issues of climate finance in Africa. As the continent prepares for a critical donor roundtable for the Blue Fund on May 26, Akhannouch emphasized Morocco’s unwavering support for collaborative climate governance.

Strengthening Africa’s Climate Leadership
In his opening remarks, Akhannouch reiterated Morocco’s commitment to the Congo Basin Climate Commission, aspiring to transform it into a beacon of African climate governance and solidarity. Initiated under King Mohammed VI’s leadership during the Africa Action Summit in Marrakech in 2016, this initiative aims to promote region-wide strategies against climate challenges.

Advancing the Blue Fund
The Prime Minister highlighted recent advancements in the Blue Fund, which has witnessed significant progress in governance and support for environmental investment projects. Morocco, as a founding partner, has played a pivotal role in developing the preliminary study that identified over 200 investment projects aimed at sustainable development within the Congo Basin.

Fostering Global Environmental Alliances
During the summit, Akhannouch underscored the necessity for closer ties among the world’s major forest basins, notably the Congo, Amazon, and Southeast Asian forests. He argued that aligning these regions’ stances could enhance their influence in international climate negotiations and advocate for fairer funding for forest-rich nations.

Call for Action
The Prime Minister also urged financing partners, international institutions, and the private sector to support the Blue Fund’s investment plan. He stressed that the current phase demands a shift from political commitments to practical, fundable projects that can make a tangible impact on the ground.
