Morocco’s commitment extends beyond national borders, illustrated by its participation in a global coalition against synthetic drugs launched this year. These initiatives have already yielded significant results, including large-scale seizures of narcotics and dismantling criminal networks.
Efforts to Counter Irregular Migration
Ambassador Mohamed Arouchi, Morocco’s permanent representative to the African Union and the Economic Commission for Africa, highlighted the kingdom’s proactive stance against irregular migration. Morocco’s efforts have thwarted thousands of migration attempts and led to the disbandment of numerous smuggling networks. Under the leadership of King Mohammed VI, Morocco has been at the forefront of migration governance in Africa, championing the African Migration Agenda while implementing comprehensive national strategies.
The Moroccan delegation also called for a unified African response to combat the evolving threats posed by organized crime, emphasizing that these criminal activities serve as a destabilizing force. Arouchi warned that the lines separating organized crime, political violence, and armed conflict are increasingly blurred, exacerbated by the interplay between criminal networks and terrorist groups, which pose a direct threat to state sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The Need for Coordinated Action
In this context, Arouchi stressed the urgent necessity for a coordinated response across national, regional, and continental levels. This approach should focus on unifying efforts, sharing expertise, and harmonizing strategies to effectively tackle the root causes of organized crime.
Concluding his remarks, he reinforced the importance of collective responsibility and enhanced cooperation in the fight against transnational crime, urging all parties to take action.
