Trump Mocks Macron and Intensifies Criticism of NATO
During a private lunch, U.S. President Donald Trump mocked his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron, referencing his relationship with his wife in a controversial manner, amid broader criticisms directed at NATO.
A video briefly posted on the White House’s YouTube channel captured Trump’s statements, where he claimed that some allies, including France, had not met requests for support amid the escalation related to the war against Iran in the Middle East, even though he asserted he “did not need them.”
In his remarks, Trump made sarcastic comments about Macron and his wife Brigitte Macron, referring to a prior video that some found contentious, although Macron had previously dismissed its authenticity and labeled it part of a disinformation campaign.
Trump also addressed his request for military support in the Gulf region, asserting that the United States is achieving “record numbers” in military operations, before hinting at an alleged refusal from the French president to respond urgently to those requests.
In a related context, Trump reiterated his criticisms of NATO, describing it as a “paper tiger,” a stance that reflects ongoing tensions in Washington’s relationships with certain allies.
These comments come amid rising debate regarding the alliance’s role in facing security challenges, particularly with increasing calls within the U.S. administration to reassess relationships with NATO, as highlighted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
