The United Nations Security Council is preparing to hold closed consultations this April to discuss developments in the Western Sahara conflict, with a focus on assessing the performance of the MINURSO mission and its future role amid a stalled political process.

According to information published by Security Council Report, Council members will hear two briefings from the mission’s head, Alexander Ivanko, and the personal envoy of the Secretary-General, Staffan de Mistura, as part of ongoing efforts led by the UN to revive negotiations between the concerned parties.

These consultations fall under the implementation of UN Resolution 2797, adopted on October 31, 2025, which extended MINURSO’s mandate for an additional year and called for the Secretary-General to prepare a comprehensive strategic assessment on the mission’s future, expected to serve as a foundation for discussion within the Council.

This move occurs in the context of ongoing political stagnation surrounding the issue, despite UN efforts to invigorate the political process amidst differing positions among the parties and the difficulty of achieving tangible progress in negotiations.

Council members are anticipated to base their deliberations on the expected evaluation findings, with the possibility of adopting a supportive stance towards UN mediation efforts and pushing for the resumption of political dialogue aimed at reaching a realistic and sustainable solution to the conflict.
