The Democratic Republic of the Congo Returns to the World Cup After Half a Century of Absence

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is rewriting its football history after securing a spot in the 2026 World Cup, ending a long absence of more than fifty years since its sole participation in 1974 when it was known as Zaire.

This qualification came after a challenging journey culminating in a decisive victory in the global playoff, where the Congolese team displayed tactical resilience and high fighting spirit, managing to clinch the qualifying goal in extra time, thus announcing its return to the biggest global football stage.

This achievement marks a historic milestone for Congolese football, which has experienced years of decline and instability, before regaining its shine through a new generation of players in European leagues, backed by a coaching staff that successfully rebuilt the team on strong competitive foundations.

Moreover, this qualification reflects the overall development of African football, amid an increase in the number of slots allocated to the continent for the 2026 edition, to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, which has provided greater opportunities for teams that were previously distant from the global spotlight.

Congolese fans are looking forward to a commendable participation that evokes memories of past glories, reinforcing that this return is not merely a coincidence but a result of long-term efforts and an ambitious sports project aimed at cementing the country’s position on the international stage.
