The Competition Council Guides the Fuel Market

The Competition Authority published a notice on Tuesday regarding the evolution of diesel and gasoline prices in international markets and their impact on retail prices at stations in Morocco during the period from March 1 to 16, 2026.

The notice indicates that the global oil market is experiencing sharp fluctuations due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, which directly affects importing economies like Morocco. Despite this international influence, the transfer of these price hikes to fuel prices in the kingdom varies between products. Diesel did not see a full compensation for the international rise (-0.89 MAD/liter), whereas the increase in gasoline exceeded the global rise (+0.17 MAD/liter).

The analysis reveals a complex mechanism within the local market, where supply prices differ among players by about 0.20 MAD/liter for diesel, roughly 10% of the average increase. However, local competition, alongside the uniformity of the product, causes retail prices to converge, displaying a form of “automatic adjustment” in the market.

The notice also highlights the role of the price adjustment timeline, which has been long established and sets review dates at the beginning and end of each half-month. This framework ensures stability and predictability for consumers, but at the same time imposes a kind of synchronization in the behavior of market players, dampening the intensity of competition.

Amid these data, the council responsible for competition remains in its strategic position as an unseen architect of the market. Continuous dialogue with stakeholders about the potential development of market practices does not aim to impose decisions but rather to guide the market towards greater transparency, improved competitive dynamics, and clearer visibility for consumers.

In this way, the local fuel market remains in a hybrid equilibrium, combining vibrant competition with inherited regulatory mechanisms, alongside precise indications for potential performance improvements without compromising overall stability.
