Lead
Under the esteemed patronage of King Mohammed VI, Rabat is poised to host an unprecedented international cultural event. The occasion will mark the launch of “Rabat, World Book Capital 2026,” alongside the 31st edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair, underlining Morocco’s rising status as a global cultural hub and knowledge center.

A Landmark Cultural Celebration

Rabat’s designation by UNESCO as World Book Capital for 2026 reflects the city’s long-standing commitment to the promotion of knowledge and the arts. This honor not only carries symbolic weight but is reinforced by a diverse annual program aimed at fostering reading and enhancing access to literature. The upcoming events are set to transform Rabat into a vibrant meeting point for thinkers, writers, and publishers from around the globe.

International Book Fair: A Showcase of Diversity

Scheduled from May 1 to 10, 2026, the International Book and Publishing Fair, organized by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication in collaboration with regional institutions, will be a key highlight of this cultural celebration. This year’s fair will welcome an unprecedented 890 exhibitors from 60 countries, presenting over 130,000 titles across various fields. France has been invited as the guest of honor, a decision that underscores the deep cultural ties between the two nations and paves the way for new avenues of intellectual and creative exchange.

Honoring a Literary Legend

The festival’s programming will prominently feature Moroccan traveler Ibn Battuta, spotlighting literature on journeys and travel narratives as central themes. This focus not only pays tribute to a figure emblematic of exploration and curiosity but also broadens discussions on intercultural dialogue and adventure.

Inclusive Cultural Engagement

Beyond traditional exhibition spaces, Rabat’s initiative emphasizes inclusivity, as it seeks to engage various segments of society through innovative cultural activities. Events will be held in hospitals, prisons, orphanages, public transport, and communal squares, illustrating a genuine commitment to making culture accessible to all. The accompanying cultural program plans to feature over 200 events, with more than 720 intellectuals and creators addressing topics related to reading, shifts in cultural industries, and celebrating notable contributions to the cultural landscape.

As Rabat steps into the spotlight, it reaffirms its stature as a cultural capital and reinforces Morocco’s role as a key player in fostering cultural dialogue and embracing diverse global experiences. In a world where culture is an essential driver for development and global connection, this event stands as a testament to Morocco’s dedication to the arts and knowledge.
