Rabat Hosts the First National Debate on Archives in Morocco

On April 8, Rabat will host the First National Debate on Archives in Morocco, initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Communication, in partnership with the Archives Foundation of Morocco and the Academy of the Moroccan Kingdom, under the patronage of King Mohammed VI.

This event aims to foster a broad national discussion on archival governance issues, with the goal of preparing a national roadmap for the period 2026-2036 that seeks to modernize the management of public archives and enhance their effectiveness.

The debate also aspires to establish the role of archives as a fundamental pillar for good governance and to support transparency, while identifying strategic directions for the sector. It will also promote dialogue between decision-makers, researchers, and professionals, and build a comprehensive and modern national policy in the field of archives.

This meeting is part of efforts to value archives as a shared heritage and a lever for sustainable development, in addition to exchanging experiences and best practices, and preparing a comprehensive assessment of the state of archival practice in Morocco. It will also result in practical recommendations to address current and future challenges.

The discussions will feature the participation of Moroccan and foreign officials and experts, distributed over nine thematic sessions addressing issues such as the national archive policy, regional archives and their role in territorial development, and private archives, alongside the legal framework and governance.

Topics will also cover digitization, artificial intelligence in the archival field, the role of archives in cultural industries and the knowledge economy, as well as training and qualification, international cooperation, and archival sovereignty.
