The 26th edition of the “Minerals and Enterprises” Forum kicked off today in Rabat, under the patronage of King Mohammed VI. The gathering, featuring government officials, experts, and representatives from various African nations, highlights the increasing global significance of mineral and energy resources amidst a shifting economic landscape.
Addressing Global Shifts in Mining
The opening session was attended by Leila Benali, Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, alongside Ryad Mezzour, Minister of Industry and Trade. The event served as a platform to discuss transformative trends in the mining sector and its pivotal role in reshaping global economic dynamics.
In her address, Benali emphasized that this year’s theme resonates with the rapid changes sweeping across the globe, particularly in light of supply chain disruptions affecting energy and mineral resources. She pointed out that these challenges have underscored Morocco’s strategic choices in the energy sector and its resilience in adapting to international fluctuations.
Strengthening South-South Partnerships
Focusing on the African context, Benali stressed the importance of reinforcing South-South partnerships. She highlighted the significance of the Marrakech Declaration, which brought together over forty African nations around a shared vision of sustainable governance in the mining sector. This initiative aims to facilitate financing for projects at various phases, guided by environmentally and institutionally relevant benchmarks suited to the African landscape.
Furthermore, she noted the launch of a digital mining registry, a crucial step toward modernizing the management of national mineral resources. This initiative is poised to enhance transparency, streamline processes, and safeguard the strategic assets inherent in those resources.
Promoting African Cooperation
This forum is themed around the centrality of African cooperation, positioning Morocco as a key player in the continent’s evolving dynamics. Organized by the National School of Mines in Rabat, the event has drawn participation from diplomats and professionals from several African nations, reflecting a collective commitment to addressing the shared challenges and opportunities within the mining sector.
As global resource demand escalates, forums like these are more than discussions; they are essential for catalyzing collaborations that will define the future of Africa’s mineral wealth.
