Rabat’s Cultural Renaissance: A Global Book Capital in 2026

Under the esteemed patronage of King Mohammed VI, Rabat is poised to assert its identity as an international cultural hub with the announcement of “Rabat: World Book Capital 2026.” This initiative is set to culminate in the 31st International Publishing and Book Fair, marking a pivotal moment that transforms the capital into a global platform for knowledge and creativity.

A Celebration of Literature and Diversity

Beginning April 24, 2026, Rabat will kick off the “World Book Capital 2026” program, which places the city at the forefront of the global cultural scene. The festivities will continue with the International Publishing and Book Fair from May 1 to 10, 2026. This dual event is designed not only to celebrate literature and creativity but also to reinforce the publishing industry’s significance within the region.

Rabat’s designation as “World Book Capital” is part of a UNESCO initiative that acknowledges the city’s rich historical backdrop and its essential role in the promotion and production of knowledge. The International Publishing and Book Fair stands as a cornerstone of this initiative, acting as an annual meeting point for cultural and literary stakeholders.

A Dynamic Cultural Program

The Moroccan Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication, alongside various institutions, will execute an extensive cultural program featuring 342 events spread across 12 thematic areas. This initiative aims to make literature more accessible, reaching diverse social groups by venturing beyond traditional venues into hospitals, rehabilitation centers, orphanages, public squares, and modes of transportation.

The 31st edition of the International Publishing and Book Fair is set to welcome 890 exhibitors—320 directly and 570 via delegate representation—spanning 60 countries and showcasing over 130,000 titles in various fields of knowledge. Notably, France will be the guest of honor, a reflection of the deep-seated cultural ties that exist between the two nations.

Honoring Legacy and Innovation

This year’s fair will also pay tribute to the legendary Moroccan explorer Ibn Battuta, symbolizing travel, discovery, and civilizational interaction. The themes of travel literature and storytelling will serve as focal points for the cultural programming, enriching discussions around global narratives and human experiences.

The fair’s rich agenda will include over 204 activities involving more than 720 participants, including thinkers, writers, and artists who will explore reading trends and developments in cultural and creative industries. Moreover, the program will feature celebrated figures from the realms of thought and culture, further enhancing Rabat’s status as a world capital of literature and culture.

Conclusion: A Significant Cultural Moment

As the countdown to 2026 begins, Rabat’s ascendance to a leading global cultural position not only celebrates the written word but also underscores the importance of literature in fostering community dialogue and cultural exchange. This initiative promises to weave a stronger narrative of shared knowledge and creative expression, establishing Rabat as a leading city in the realm of global literature.
