Morocco Confirms Its Ethical Approach to Migration Management from Cairo

The Moroccan ambassador to Egypt, Mohamed Ait Ali, highlighted that Morocco adopts a consistent ethical approach to managing migration issues during an African ministerial meeting held in Cairo.

The Moroccan diplomat emphasized that this approach, established by King Mohammed VI, is based on non-negotiable principles, primarily human dignity, genuine partnerships, and shared responsibility, free from narrow political calculations.

At the national level, he mentioned that Morocco has launched extensive programs to regularize the status of irregular migrants, allowing them access to education, healthcare, and the labor market, reflecting a vision that considers integration a duty dictated by values and sustainability requirements.

On a continental level, he recalled the African Union’s initiative for the African migration agenda, alongside the establishment of the African Migration Observatory in Rabat, which provides accurate data to support effective public policies in this field.

Internationally, Ait Ali stressed the strength of the partnership between the kingdom and the International Organization for Migration, which has lasted for over two decades, focusing on protecting migrants’ rights and preserving their dignity.

In the context of preparing for the second review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration, adopted in Marrakech in 2018, the Moroccan official called for a renewed commitment to the spirit of this compact, transitioning from promises to actual implementation.

Morocco also proposed, as part of enhancing joint African work, expanding the network of national migration observatories, strengthening coordination with the African Observatory in Rabat, as well as supporting success stories, ensuring sustainable funding, and broadening partnerships.

The ambassador concluded by emphasizing that migration presents the world with two choices: either closure and fear or cooperation and solidarity, stressing that Africa must play an active role in shaping the future of global migration rather than merely reacting to its challenges.
