The Moroccan government is launching an extensive initiative to clean up the Bouregreg River, with a projected budget of approximately 510.77 million dirhams. This project aims to combat industrial pollution, enhance environmental protection, and improve water quality, reflecting a commitment to sustainability amid growing ecological concerns.
A Significant Investment in Environmental Protection
Leila Benali, Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development, announced that the government will allocate 50 million dirhams to the project, which primarily involves the establishment of wastewater treatment facilities in the industrial areas of Juhara in Khmissat and Bouknadel in Salé. These facilities are intended to reduce the discharge of contaminated water into the river and mitigate the impact of industrial activities on this vital waterway.
Benali emphasized that environmental protection remains a top national priority, underpinned by a comprehensive strategy that aligns with advanced regionalization efforts. This approach includes fostering collaborative engagement among various stakeholders to ensure effective interventions.
Support Mechanisms for Industries
Since 1998, the government has actively supported industrial enterprises in addressing pollution, utilizing financial support mechanisms such as the Fund for Combating Industrial Pollution and a voluntary program for wastewater management. These initiatives offer grants that can cover up to 40% of total project costs, empowering businesses to equip themselves with facilities for processing liquid, solid, and gaseous waste.
Benali revealed that these financial mechanisms have financed 125 projects across several regions, with a total investment of 933 million dirhams, including 338 million dirhams in grants. This indicates a sustained effort to drive environmental transformation within the industrial sector.
Future Programs and Initiatives
A new program aimed at preventing and reducing industrial pollution for the years 2025-2035 is currently in the approval process. This initiative intends to rehabilitate industrial zones, support small and medium-sized enterprises, bolster traditional industries, and enhance the olive oil sector, all while considering ecological impacts.
In parallel with these efforts, Benali highlighted the completion of wastewater treatment facilities in several regions, including a project in Ain Chkak costing 303.1 million dirhams and another in Olad Taima for 60 million dirhams. Additional facilities in Skhirat and Ain Atiq amount to 205.62 million dirhams, with a 10 million dirham project in the economic zone of Qanfouda.
Targeting Specific Environmental Challenges
Addressing olive oil production’s ecological footprint, a multi-party agreement was signed to develop projects focused on gathering, processing, and recycling waste generated by this sector, which carries an estimated cost of 185 million dirhams. The Ministry’s contribution totals 60 million dirhams, aligning with efforts to minimize environmental damage and promote the sustainability of natural resources.
