Bourita: The U.S. is a Key Political Ally and Strategic Partner for Morocco

Lead
Morocco’s Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita reaffirmed the United States’ role as a vital political ally and strategic partner during a joint press conference in Rabat. Highlighting the robust and multifaceted nature of the bilateral partnership, Bourita emphasized mutual collaboration across political, security, and economic dimensions.

A Firm Political Alliance
During discussions with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, Bourita underscored the depth of the Morocco-U.S. partnership, which has flourished under the leadership of King Mohammed VI and former President Donald Trump. The partnership embodies a shared commitment to addressing regional and global challenges through regular political dialogue and ongoing consultations.

Security Cooperation on the Rise
Bourita showcased the close security cooperation between the two nations, particularly spotlighting the recent launch of the 28th edition of the “African Lion” exercises—Africa’s largest military drills, which exemplify the military alliance’s growth. Additionally, he pointed to recent intensive security meetings held in Washington aimed at reinforcing a collaborative framework against common threats.

Economic Ties Strengthening
On the economic front, Bourita noted that trade between Morocco and the U.S. has skyrocketed, multiplying sevenfold since the implementation of the Free Trade Agreement. He highlighted that Morocco stands as the only African nation with a Free Trade Agreement with the United States, indicating a significant economic convergence.

International Collaboration and Regional Stability
Addressing international cooperation, Bourita expressed Morocco’s support for President Trump’s initiatives aimed at global security and development. The kingdom is set to join the recently launched “Trade Over Aid” initiative, aligning with Morocco’s vision for sustainable economic partnerships in Africa.

Bourita also discussed the Western Sahara issue, pointing out that the U.S. stance—particularly following the historic phone call between King Mohammed VI and Trump in December 2020—has been pivotal. This shift solidifies U.S. support for Morocco’s claims over Western Sahara and endorses the proposal for autonomy as a realistic framework for resolving the longstanding conflict.

Conclusion
As Morocco continues to consolidate its alliances, the partnership with the United States remains a cornerstone of its diplomatic and strategic efforts, emphasizing a shared vision for regional stability and economic growth.
