Morocco’s Prime Minister Aziz Akhannouch has announced plans to enhance the country’s healthcare infrastructure by completing 15 new hospitals by 2026, adding approximately 3,000 additional beds. This initiative is part of a broader effort to reform the national health system, ensuring equitable access to quality healthcare services across the nation.
Strengthening Healthcare Infrastructure
During a recent meeting of the National Health System Reform Command Committee in Rabat, Akhannouch highlighted the strategic importance of expanding medical facilities. This effort aligns with royal directives aimed at establishing a sustainable and fair healthcare system. The focus is on enhancing the accessibility of healthcare services for all citizens, which is particularly pressing given the current challenges in Morocco’s healthcare landscape.
Increasing Capacity and Modernizing Services
The newly announced hospitals will serve as vital resources to bolster the country’s medical capacity, addressing growing demands in urban and rural areas alike. In addition to the new hospitals, the government plans to establish six university hospitals with an investment exceeding 20.6 billion dirhams, totaling about 3,807 beds. The Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir is poised to become a model for modern healthcare facilities in the region.
Promoting Regional Health Integration
At the meeting, Akhannouch emphasized the critical role of local health groups in reorganizing the health service delivery model. These groups aim to foster integration among different levels of care and to promote regional health governance. The Prime Minister urged stakeholders to accelerate the activation of these groups, noting that five general directors have already been appointed to lead this initiative.
Digital Transformation in Healthcare
The government also reported significant progress in digitalizing the healthcare sector. Efforts to develop a national digital platform are underway, consolidating data from both public and private healthcare sectors. This digital strategy aims to enhance the continuity of care and improve the coordination of health services through a robust and secure integrated system.
