Morocco condemns Iran’s attacks from Geneva and reaffirms its solidarity with Arab countries
Ambassador Omar Zniber, Morocco’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office in Geneva, expressed a firm stance regarding recent developments in the Middle East, asserting that Iran has carried out “unacceptable actions” that infringe upon the sovereignty of several Arab countries and threaten their security and stability.
In a press interview, the diplomatic official explained that Morocco’s position aligns with the actions led by the Arab group within the Human Rights Council, notably a statement condemning attacks targeting Arab nations, particularly in the Gulf region, considering these acts a clear violation of international law.
Zniber confirmed that Rabat has expressed its full solidarity with the countries that have come under bombardment, indicating that this stance is also echoed in resolutions issued by the United Nations General Assembly, which condemned Iranian behavior.
In a related context, the spokesperson emphasized Morocco’s support for Lebanon amid the challenges it is facing, highlighting the Kingdom’s commitment to the unity of its territory and stability, reiterating that dialogue remains the optimal way to overcome regional crises, away from military escalation.
Regarding the work of the Human Rights Council, Zniber stressed that Morocco’s presidency of the council in 2024 aims to shield its activities from political exploitation, focusing on comprehensive issues that pertain to fundamental rights, such as health and food security.
The Moroccan diplomat noted that the council has broadened its focus to include contemporary challenges, including the impacts of modern technologies and artificial intelligence, alongside climate change, asserting that these transformations have a direct correlation with the enjoyment of individual rights.
Zniber concluded by reaffirming that the Human Rights Council continues to fulfill its role in monitoring the implementation of international agreements related to civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, ensuring the inclusiveness of these rights and avoiding their reduction to selective approaches.
