Agreement Between the Ministry of Equipment and the National Agency for Water and Forests to Combat Sedimentation in Dams and Enhance Water Resource Sustainability

On Monday, in Rabat, the Ministry of Equipment and Water, along with the National Agency for Water and Forests, signed a new framework agreement aimed at combating the phenomenon of sedimentation in dams. This initiative seeks to promote sustainable management of water resources in Morocco.

The agreement was signed by Minister of Equipment and Water Nizar Baraka and Director General of the National Agency for Water and Forests Abdel Rahim Houmi, as part of a collective effort to address the challenges associated with sedimentation in dams.

This partnership aims to adopt an integrated approach for the planning and management of water basins located upstream of dams, contributing to the reduction of sediment accumulation in reservoirs and safeguarding their storage capacity.

Nizar Baraka clarified that this agreement aims to enhance the protection of water basins and improve water resource management, emphasizing the importance of adopting a preventive approach to counteract sedimentation, alongside integrating socio-economic dimensions to address flood risks.

For his part, Abdel Rahim Houmi highlighted the significance of this initiative, pointing out that it will allow for the development of an integrated program for water resource management, strengthening institutional cooperation to protect water basins and ensure the sustainability of water infrastructures.

The agreement also encompasses improving data exchange and technical expertise between the two parties, executing joint programs for managing water basins, and adopting soil conservation solutions to reduce sediment flow towards dams.

This initiative comes in the wake of increasing challenges posed by sedimentation in dams, which gradually reduces their storage capacity and affects the supply of drinking water, irrigation, and hydropower generation.
