Iran’s Minister of Sports, Ahmad Dooniamali, has officially announced the country’s withdrawal from the 2026 World Cup, set to take place from June 11 to July 18 in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, citing military escalation and political tensions in the Middle East as the primary reasons.

In statements to the German news agency, Dooniamali indicated that current conditions do not permit the national team to participate, noting that Iran has experienced “two wars in less than a year, resulting in the loss of thousands of citizens.” He added that if the situation continues in this manner, participation in the tournament is impossible.

This decision comes as Iran was drawn into a group that includes Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt, with its opening match scheduled against New Zealand on June 16.

According to FIFA regulations, any withdrawal from the tournament prior to the scheduled date exposes the withdrawing federation to fines starting from €274,000, potentially escalating to €549,000 if the withdrawal occurs less than 30 days before the competition begins. The federation is also required to return all funds allocated for participation, with the possibility of disqualifying the team from future tournaments or replacing it with another team. Additionally, they may be liable for any organizational or financial damages resulting from the withdrawal.

FIFA has hinted that Iran could face further sanctions if its withdrawal disrupts the match schedule or leads to financial losses, while alternative scenarios for reallocating slots in Asia have already begun, with the UAE likely to be nominated for the vacant spot, followed by Iraq based on its performance in qualifying matches.

This decision highlights the unprecedented challenges facing global football, intertwining politics, international security, and sport, and underscores FIFA’s strict stance on enforcing national teams’ commitments and adherence to tournament rules.
