The Major Deal: India Responds to Trump and Stops Purchasing Russian Oil

Washington – On Monday, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a new agreement with India that includes a reduction in tariffs on American products from 25% to 18%, a move he described as aimed at enhancing economic relations between the two countries.

Trump confirmed that India would also be buying $500 billion worth of American products, pointing out that these measures would help “end the war in Ukraine, which is costing thousands of lives weekly.”

In turn, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his pleasure with the tariff reduction on platform X, stating that “U.S. leadership is essential for global peace, stability, and prosperity.” He looked forward to strengthening the partnership with the United States. However, Modi did not mention any details regarding the cessation of Russian oil purchases, raising questions about the enforcement of this aspect of the agreement.

This agreement comes amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war, where the United States has been pressuring India to reduce its dependence on Russian oil, using tariffs as an economic and diplomatic pressure tool.

Moreover, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are expected to participate in trilateral talks with Russian and Ukrainian officials in Abu Dhabi in the coming days, aiming to find a way out of the crisis that has persisted for over four years.

These developments reflect the U.S. administration’s approach of utilizing trade policy as a tool for international pressure, focusing on leveraging the vast Indian market to boost U.S. economic and political interests.
