Saudi Arabia: King Salman Calls for Rain Prayer Due to Delayed Rainfall
King Salman bin Abdulaziz, the custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, has called for the holding of rain prayer across the kingdom, in hopes of attracting the rain that has been delayed this year, according to a statement from the Saudi Royal Court reported by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
The statement indicated that the call was made following the tradition of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to hold rain prayer when there is a need for rain.
Most regions of the kingdom are experiencing a shortage of rainfall this year, while some elevated and mountainous areas such as Taif and Asir typically receive regular rain during the winter season.
Rainfall is a crucial source for replenishing groundwater stores. The government has constructed a number of dams to collect rainwater for irrigation and drinking. Saudi Arabia primarily relies on desalination for drinking water and on groundwater for irrigation, with rainfall contributing to the enhancement of these sources and providing additional supplies.
